Teaching & Technology Guides
We maintain the following help guides on university technology that can be used to enhance your teaching. Our guides are written and maintained by Center for Academic Innovation staff specifically with University of Southern Maine faculty and teaching in mind.
Brightspace Guide for Faculty
Brightspace is USM’s Learning Management System (LMS). An LMS is an online tool for teaching online. The Faculty Brightspace Guide is an indispensable compendium of information on how to use Brightspace. It will walk you through all of the steps in the course creation process, or can be search for a specific topic. It also offers a Frequently Asked Questions list (FAQ). This guide is also a companion to our Self-Paced Brightspace Training for Faculty.
Zoom Guide for Faculty
This guide will take you through the basics of using and teaching synchronously over Zoom.
Kaltura Guide for Faculty
Kaltura is USM’s video platform. It is for permanent storage of video and audio for use in your courses. It provides tools for posting media stored there in Brightspace, recording lectures, and more! Zoom and Kaltura are integrated with each other, so meetings you record in Zoom will automatically appear in your Kaltura My Media page.
Guides for Students
The following guides and resources are provided to faculty for distribution to their students. Tools like Zoom and Kaltura are available to students as well, so if you develop an assignment or project which uses them, you can provide your students with links to these guides to help them use the tools effectively.
Additionally, our partners in the USM Learning Commons have produced a set on learning modules for students on how to use Brightspace and also how to be a successful online learner. Students can access these resources using the following link.
