“Open Education” is an approach to education that focuses on increasing access to knowledge and on involving more learners and scholars in the process of knowledge creation. Its hallmark principles are access, equity, and engagement. In this presentation, Robin will explore how open education— including Open Educational Resources (OER), open pedagogy, and open approaches to research and knowledge-sharing— can reinvigorate our teaching and refocus our institutions and courses squarely on the needs of learners. Robin will share outcomes data that can help guide us toward small and large shifts in our instructional designs in order to help more students find success in college and beyond. With an eye toward practical examples and a frank acknowledgment of the challenges that are shaping our higher education landscape today, Robin will outline open frameworks that can offer us a hopeful and sustainable path to the future.

Robin DeRosaRobin DeRosa is a professor of Interdisciplinary Studies and the Director of Learning & Libraries at Plymouth State University, part of the University System of New Hampshire. A national advocate for public higher education, Robin has consulted with hundreds of colleges and universities around the world on issues related to college affordability, open education, digital learning, and the purpose and potential of libraries.
